J i l l i a n  H a n d

I am a social worker, certified birth doula, postpartum doula, and Birthing From Within Educator/Mentor. I also have training in prenatal loss, postpartum mood disorders, and fertility issues. With a combination of doula and social work expertise, I am able to offer labor and birth support that is partially covered under most insurances. Please email me for more info.

I have been actively involved in the doula movement, both locally and internationally. Currently I am the Chair for the Doula Collective of NL, and have just finished 5 years as Eastern Canada Director for DONA International. I have been a doula for almost 10 years.

My mission as a birth professional is to assist women and their partners to embrace childbirth as a meaningful and profound rite of passage. I believe the essence of childbirth preparation is self-discovery and I aim to help women birth-in-awareness through the teaching of pain coping practices and creative self-expression.

Also, as a Postpartum doula and Birth Story Listener, I am available to provide holistic hands-on practical and emotional support and education to new parents as they transition into a new family unit. I am trained to facilitate the processing of unsatisfactory or traumatic birth experiences in a way that leads to healing and wholeness.

Krista, first time mother
Jillian, we cannot thank you enough for all that you've done. You made bringing Bryony Faye into this world such a wonderful and unforgettable experience. We were so blessed to have you with us.

Rebecca, first-time mother
Jillian, Thanks so much for sharing this amazing journey with us, and for being such a great support for us since Sorcha's birth.

Rebecca and Adam, first time parents
Choosing Jillian as our doula just felt intuitive. From our first meeting, Jillian was friendly, open, and knowledgeable. She made every effort to put myself and my husband at ease, and provided an unconditional affirmation of our birth choices and early parenting decisions. In the early days after our daughter's birth, Jillian offered so much support, encouragement, and advice: on breastfeeding, infant care, and - crucially, mama care (not to mention some really great soup!). Her help was essential to getting us through the long, sleepless nights, the trials of breastfeeding, and the anxiety of new parenthood. She assured us that it was *normal* to feel clueless and overwhelmed, and she was there to help us overcome those obstacles. We are so grateful to have had Jillian's calm presence to support us as we *became* parents.
