E r i n O'R e i l l y BNRN, CD(DONA), LCCE
I began my journey as a birth doula in 2010 and have since attended over 100 births! I graduated from Memorial University in 2005 with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing, and have worked in mental health and in paediatrics. Currently I am on an extended maternity leave and fully enjoying working on my passions and building my side business, Mama May I, an online based natural parenting boutique.
I have completed many trainings over the years and certified with DONA international, Lamaze International as a Childbirth Educator, along with taking Breastfeeding Educator training, Hypnobabies doula training, and Spinning Babies trainings. I have attained many skills to help you have a faster, more comfortable birth.
My intention when working with families is to help them achieve their birth goals, whatever they may be. I strive to empower, inspire and to provide unwavering support. I believe that having a positive birth experience can profoundly impact a woman's immediate and long term well being. Having a doula by your side believing in you and helping you through the birth process can help you reach your birth goals.
---My first two children were born with the help of midwives in Ontario—they weren’t just a healthcare team, they became part of the family. When I got pregnant after my family had moved to NL I wanted to create the same sort of supportive family for my third birthing experience. Without midwifery in NL, I reached out to the Doula Collective. While I hadn’t had a doula in my first two pregnancies, many of my friends had worked with doulas and found it to be extremely rewarding. After reading the bios of the different doula’s and finding out we were having twins, my husband and I contacted Erin O’Reilly because of her background in nursing and her education in breastfeeding. We thought that both would come in handy with a twin birth! Given it was my first time working with a doula, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But Erin made it easy. My husband and I met with her a few times before the birth to chat about what we wanted the birth to look like. Given that it was twin birth, the pregnancy was deemed at risk and so there were more unknowns. Erin made me feel at ease with everything and her knowledge about the healthcare system was extremely valuable. With her help I felt supported and ready. When the day finally arrived (I went to 39 weeks!), Erin was incredible. She walked with us through the whole experience. She ensured that both my husband had everything we needed and anticipated things we didn’t even think we wanted (but that were so very appreciated!). Because we had worked with Erin and had discussed everything ahead of time, the birth felt seamless. We advocated for things that were important to us and Erin helped us every step of the way. After the birth Erin came to visit me in the hospital and later at home. She responded to my many questions and her calming/soothing energy was always reassuring. She was there for me, whatever I needed, and for that I am forever grateful. She was a gift and a blessing to have as part of my twin birth experience!
---I was afraid. Erin empowered me. After a tramautic first birth experience the second had to be different. Erin listened empathetically to my fears, acknowledged them and helped me reframe. She enabled me to see options and alternatives. She constantly reminded me I had choices. When birth day came I was prepared. Erin encouraged me to articulate my birth plan, ask questions and stay positive. The second birth experience was different - it was redemptive. With Erin's support I confronted dark emotions and emerged a stronger mother for both my children. Thank you for holding my hand Erin. May you hold many more.
an incredible doula! After a very traumatic birthing experience (followed
by a C-section) I was very nervous about the birth of my second daughter.
Thankfully, Erin was brought into our lives. Not only did she agree to be
our doula with practically no notice, she also offered to work free of charge
due to our financial situation. I cannot express the difference between
this birth and our last. Erin was a wonderful support during the birth and
was very helpful with a wealth of information and tips. She was able to
help me so much through the contractions and labour and was so encouraging
when I thought I wanted to give up. In the end we were able to have a wonderful
birthing experience and stuck very closely to our birth plan. I have told
all my friends about her and will make sure Ihave a doula for all my births
from now on.
---Having Erin's help in the latter stages of our first pregnancy and delivery was like "going into an exam with the answer key in hand", as described by my husband, Troy. She enlightened us on so many different levels for the labouring process and birthplan, including her expertise as both a medical professional, a mother and a doula. Erin helped guide both of us through the endless amount of information to meaningful readings to help prepare me emotionally and mentally for a natural childbirth. Her presence during the labouring process provided the clinching support to my husband through some of the more "colorful moments"! I can not imagine going through the labouring process without her insight and kindness. Troy, Duncan and I are forever grateful!! Thanks SO much Erin - you are the best!!
